Google and Twitter to Work Together to Enhance User’s Search Experience

We know that Twitter is most popular social media site after Facebook and it has over 280 active million users. And, it seems Google wants to its stream of tweets called “firehose” in its search network. In early February 2015, Google and Twitter entered into an agreement that will provide the internet search company to gain full access to Twitter’s stream of tweets. Although both companies didn’t reveal exact details about their partnership, but experts in the search and social media marketing industries are expecting new opportunities created from this deal.

What Google Gain from this Deal

According to Search Engine Land, this partnership will enable Google to gain access to Twitter’s stream of tweets called as the firehose. The term ‘firehose’ refers to Twitter messages that will be sprayed nearly 9000 tweets per second, as of the time writing. During the old days, Google used to crawl Twitter in order to pull out relevant tweets for search engine results. If Google tries to crawl Twitter at a velocity of 8766 tweets per second, the microblogging site will face server meltdown. Instead, Google has now the complete access to the firehose so that the search engine can provide users with timely information. According to Google, users aren’t satisfied with the information that is few hours old, and they want information that is 3 or 4 seconds fresh. When we look at the Twitter-Google partnership, it shows that Google wants to improve its search experience by providing instant, fresh and timely information to its users.

What Twitter Get From this Partnership

For a social networking site such as Twitter, it’s all about massive exposure on a global scale. Launched in 2006, Twitter became one of the ten most-visited websites in 2013, and has been described as “the SMS of the internet”. As of December 2014, the microblogging site has more than five-hundred million users, out of which more than 250 million are active users. But for past few years, Twitter has seen a drop in its global social media market share, it is facing tough competition not only from Facebook but also from younger social sites such as Pinterest and Instagram.

This may the reason why Twitter is tied up with an internet search giant such as Google. Twitter can enhance its visibility via Google as it is the numero uno in the search engine world. When this deal is realized, Twitter will witness more visitors to its site, thereby higher ad revenue, more signups, and more engagement.

When Will We See the Tweets in Google

According to Marketing, Land it could take a while to see the tweets in Google search results and the search engine company doesn’t yet have a strategy of featuring tweets in its SERPs. But Bloomberg says that tweets will start to be visible in Google’s search results as soon as they are posted. Most likely, the internet search company will feature results in its search result page, perhaps in a section like the Knowledge Graph. Many industry experts believe that it will work a lot such as the Knowledge Graph does these days. For instance, a search that has real-time implications will have a real-time and constantly-changing graph section directly in the main search section. Alternatively, the search engine may position the feed to the right of the main search results.

It seems that social and search has woven together when Google and Twitter combined forces to improve the user’s internet experience. Also, it will be even harder to measure where one ends and another begins. It will be good enough to say that search and social have become as tight as they have ever been. If you are in search engine marketing, you need to be aware of social. And if you are in social, you also need to be aware of search marketing, and in these days, there is not a whole lot separating the two.

Search and social media marketers can utilize this new opportunity as the content in tweets, or user-generated, conversational, hashtagged and global. As “firehose” tweets are appearing in search engine results, you can start planning your online marketing strategy for global search visibility.
